What is a Specialty Pharmacy?

Any pharmacy can fill a prescription.  It takes a unique combination of tools, training and expertise to fill a specialty medication and treat a patient.

Specialty Medication + Specialty Pharmacy

To understand what a Specialty Pharmacy does, we must first define Specialty Medication. Specialty Medications treat serious health conditions such as cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. They are complex and expensive, and many require intensive monitoring. Often-times, these medications require special storage and handling. Most Specialty Medications cannot be filled at your corner drugstore for a variety of reasons :: they’re incredibly expensive, many specialty medications have limited distribution and are only available through designated pharmacies, or your insurance company may not pay for the medication without an approval (or prior authorization).

Specialty Pharmacy focuses on these high cost, high touch medication therapies for patients with complex disease states. Many Specialty Pharmacies provide administrative services to assist physicians by working with the insurance companies to obtain prior authorization or approvals. In addition, they often provide patients with medication therapy management and offer clinical support. At Apex, we provide our patients with industry-leading clinical and financial resources. We ask questions, work in tandem with your physician and – most importantly – we listen to you.  Click here for more information.
